The history of Tartu City Run (Tartu Sügisjooks) dates back to 1983 when the first Tartu City Run was held on Tartu streets. At that time, it was one of the most popular running races. Mass sport activities became more and more popular in Estonia and following the success of the first Tartu Rattaralli in 1982 and intense requests by running fans, Tartu City Run was born. It is the predecessor of all big public races in Estonia.
Back then, the length of the run was more like a half marathon, distances were around 20km. In 2012, when the tradition of Tartu City Run is restored, the distance is 10 km. For longer distance lovers’, 1st Tartu City Marathon with 42.2km long distance, is also organized.
Actually, Tartu Sügisjooks did not disappear anywhere. Since 2000 Tartu Sügisjooks has had a new name: Tartu Running Marathon (Tartu Jooksumaraton). That year (in 2000) the race was moved from Tartu streets to Elva-Otepää and to spring time – to provide more variety for the sportsmen throughout the whole year. As in 2012 Tartu Jooksumaraton celebrates its 30th birthday (when counting from the first Tartu City Run), the legendary tradition in the Tartu streets is restored. Tartu City Run is held again on the 6th of October 2012 in Tartu city center.
1983 – first Tartu Sügisjooks was held with 19.2km long distance.
1984 – since this year children races have been always included next to the main race.
1986 – the course got an addition in Annelinna streets, the distance now was 20km.
1987 – the race had the most participants (almost 4500 participants in all distances)
1990 – a new distance – Perejooks, 5km – was added to the race.
1992 – 10km long distance was added to the race.
1995 – starting from this year the race was held half-marathon long – 21,1km.
1995 – the finish area was changed to Tartu Song Festival Grounds.
1995 – all children races were brought to the day before the main race.
1999 – Tartu Sügisjooks was moved to Elva forests.
2000 – Tartu Sügisjooks was renamed to Tartu Jooksumaraton and is now held in spring, usually in May. The race goes from Otepää to Elva (23 km).
