Freestyle in Tartu Maraton: is this breaking the long-lived tradition?

07.12.2023

In its 50th edition this upcoming February, the traditionally classic-only Tartu Maraton will have a skating distance in the program for the first time. What motivated the organizers to make this decision?

  1. The mission of Tartu Maraton is to inspire people to participate in sports and skiing. The specific skiing technique is not important; what matters is that everyone finds a skiing style or another form of physical activity that suits them best. This way, it becomes a habit, and helps to grow the physical activity for individual skiers as well as support a healthier lifestyle in general.

  2. Skating technique is more convenient. There's no need to worry about grip wax or well groomed classic tracks. Even in conditions with less snow, skiing is still possible. The charm is in its simplicity.

  3. Skating is popular, especially among younger people. It is definitely affected by biathlon which has a big TV coverage and has shaped people's opinion of skiing as a sport.

Therefore, organizers feel that it's the right time to invite also freestyle skiers to join the legendary winter festival.

The 31 km skating race of Tartu Maraton will take place on February 17, while the 63 km and 31 km classic distances  are scheduled for February 18. The jubilee program also  includes a Vintage race with old-school equipment, a social team-relay and kids events. Best entry fee is available up to December 11th.
