Gravel route for Tartu Rattamaraton is launched!

26.06.2025

For the first time ever, the race will include a gravel-specific race, and the course map for the 126 km gravel ride is now available.

Author: Gerda Tomson

The route consists of the classic 86 km course combined with a new 40 km section, offering a total of 126 km of riding. It highlights the rolling gravel roads of Southern Estonia, scenic hilltop views, lakes both big and small, a mix of renovated and abandoned farmsteads, and diverse forest landscapes.

“The main idea behind designing the course was to integrate the new segment as naturally as possible with the existing, historic Tartu Rattamaraton route. We also wanted to bring something fresh to the table by taking the race to a new area where we haven’t ridden before,” explained race director Indrek Kelk.

“While the traditional course passed through Valga and Tartu counties, the new gravel route now also visits Võru and Põlva counties.”

The new segments are particularly well-suited for gravel bikes, featuring mostly medium and small gravel roads, some wider forest trails, and about 7 km of asphalt. While the route does not include steep climbs, there are some significant ascents. The new section adds approximately 400 meters of elevation, bringing the total climbing on the 126 km course to around 1400 meters.

“I’d recommend this distance to riders who prefer fast, firm-surface riding over technical and rough terrain. It’s ideal for those who enjoy longer, smoother rides,” said Kelk. “To give more participants a chance to complete the gravel ride, we’ve extended the finish time by one hour.”
He added: “All other Tartu Rattamaraton distances are also suitable for gravel bikes – and mountain bikes are welcome on the gravel course as well. The most important thing is to choose the distance that suits you best.”

The Tartu Rattamaraton takes place on September 20–21, with race distances of 126, 86, 40, and 21 km, plus kids and virtual rides.
