One Month to Tartu Maraton – Organisers Prepare for the race on the Original Course

15.01.2026

With one month to go before Estonia’s iconic ski festival, the organisers have every reason to be optimistic. Based on current snow conditions, the race is set to take place on its traditional and world-famous course from Otepää to Elva.

“Although December was rather modest in terms of winter weather, January has delivered exactly what we hope for,” says Race Director Indrek Kelk. “We have had stable sub-zero temperatures, at times even proper winter cold, which allows the ground to freeze deeply. Snowfall has been steady, which is ideal for building the track base layer by layer. It is quite rare that by mid-January the course is in such good condition. If we were to organise the marathon today, the conditions would already be close to perfect,” he explains.

Weather forecasts indicate continued freezing temperatures in the coming weeks, and each cold week significantly reduces the risk of a sudden warmth in February. At present, thousands of ski fans are enjoying the marathon course every weekend, confirming both the quality of the tracks and the strong local skiing culture that international visitors so often highlight as part of the Tartu Ski Marathon experience.

The organising team monitors weather and snow conditions daily and continues track preparation to ensure the best possible experience for all participants.

The 52nd Tartu Ski Marathon takes place on 14–15 February 2026, welcoming thousands of skiers from Estonia and abroad.

The Race Centre, located at Lõunakeskus shopping centre, is open on Friday and Saturday, 13–14 February. After several years, the popular pasta party returns, offering ideal pre-race fuel. Bib pickup, SWIX ski waxing service and a wide selection of sports and ski gear will also be available.

At the finish area in Elva, for the first time a large sauna area will be open to all finishers, offering an authentic Estonian recovery experience. Worldloppet skiers will have a dedicated sauna, helping to meet with friends from all over the world and share the race emotions.

Further updates regarding course conditions or event organisation will be regularly available via the event website and social media channels.
