“In recent years, we have been searching for ways to make the event more appealing to international participants while also offering new challenges for local riders,” explains the Race Director Indrek Kelk the background of milestone. A key step towards joining the UCI Gravel World Series was taken last season, when a new 126 km gravel distance was added to the programme and an application was submitted for joining the 2026 series. “Our bid was approved, and Tartu Bike Marathon is now proudly the official qualifier for the UCI Gravel World Championships,” he adds.

The series status applies to the two longer distances – 86 km and 126 km. With a mix of gravel roads, dirt roads and grass sections, the course is approximately 93% off-road, with only a short paved section in the first half. In typical conditions, riders can expect a fast and flowing course. “Although Estonia is widely known for its flat terrain, the rolling hills in the southern part provide both speed and a distinctive challenge,” describes Kelk. “It’s an ideal course for riders looking to test themselves on gravel!”

“We do not plan any major changes in the courses this year. However, we continue to improve the route and explore alternative sections to make it more resilient in varying weather conditions,” explains Kelk the plans of the organising team.

One of the main changes for participants is the updated start arrangement. Riders will compete in age-groups in order to qualify for the Gravel World Championships. The top 25% of riders in each group will earn qualification. In 2026, the championships will take place in Nannup, Australia, on 10–11 October.

The 29th edition of the Tartu Bike Marathon, a UCI Gravel World Championships qualifier, will take place on Saturday, 19 September in South Estonia. The race starts in Otepää, known as Estonia’s winter capital, and finishes in Elva. The event programme also includes a shorter distances of 40 and 21 km, which are not part of the international series.
