Tartu Maraton Confirmed on the Full Original Course
The organising team confirms that the 52nd Tartu Maraton will be held on the original Otepää–Elva course on the coming weekend of 14–15 February.
“The race course has been under close attention in recent weeks, as limited snowfall has allowed less course grooming than usual. The snow cover is thinnest on the Palu–Elva section, which is why I personally inspected this part of the course again over the weekend. The snowfall in recent days has been helpful, and additional snow is forecast for the end of marathon week. The course master was also on site this morning, and we can confirm that all marathon distances can be organised on the original course,” explains Race Director Indrek Kelk.
The course is skiable along its entire length and has been so throughout January up to today. Classic tracks are set on both sides. The freestyle track is in good condition, although extra attention is required in a few track sections.
Over the past week, the course master has been testing lighter course-grooming techniques to set the classic tracks, in order to avoid using large grooming machines, which are not suitable in current snow conditions. Further course preparation will depend on weather conditions and will be adjusted as the week progresses. No grooming is planned before the next snowfall, and if necessary, additional snow will be transported to sections that require it.
More snowfall is expected towards the end of the week, quite close to the event itself — a larger amount is forecast for Friday, although weather predictions continue to change. For this reason, the organising team is also prepared for heavier snowfall, which may require additional help for course grooming or cleaning of parking areas. With an additional 10 cm of snow, current temperatures would allow the creation of an excellent classic track.
The 52nd Tartu Maraton will take place on 14–15 February. On Saturday, children’s races will be held at Tähtvere Sports Park in Tartu, and starts for the Vintage, Freestyle, and Relay races will take place from Arula. On Sunday, the Classic races will be held, with the 63 km main distance starting from Tehvandi and the 31 km race starting from Arula.
