Tartu Rattamaraton introduces a new distance

A brand new race distance was launched yesterday, specially designed for gravel bikes.

The new 126 km route combines a fresh 40 km gravel section through Valga, Võru, and Põlva counties with the classic 86 km main course.

“Our existing 86 km route already suits gravel bikes well, so there’s no need to replace it,” said Race Director Indrek Kelk. “We simply wanted to extend the ride and give it more character—and the new section does exactly that. While the added distance is long, it offers a smooth, enjoyable gravel experience.”

This new gravel course also serves a bigger ambition: joining the international UCI Gravel World Series. “Our dream was to be part of a global series for years, and the UCI’s gravel concept is a perfect fit for our event,” Kelk explained. “This year we’re in as a candidate event, with hopes of becoming a full member next season.”

The gravel race will start at 14:00—after all other distances. “We know that most participants prefer shorter, more accessible routes, so we’ve kept the existing program as it was,” Kelk said. “The only change we made was shifting the 40 km start 30 minutes later to reduce overlap with the 86 km riders on the course.”

Three-time Tartu Rattamaraton winner and former Tour de France stage winner Jaan Kirsipuu welcomed the new gravel addition. “I think adding a gravel race is the right move—Tartu Rattamaraton has always been a fast and gravely ride,” he said. “Even back in 2006, I modified my mountain bike to better handle the quick gravel sections. Gravel racing is also becoming increasingly popular worldwide,” Kirsipuu added.

For the first time, Tartu Rattamaraton will take place on a Saturday—September 20, 2025. The event draws cycling enthusiasts from across Europe and is co-financed by the European Union.
