  • 1. General info

1.1. The 29th Tartu Bike Marathon (hereinafter RM) is organized by Club Tartu Maraton (KTM), through the RM Council and Organizing Committee approved by the KTM Board, with the assistance of sponsors and supporters. RM is the fourth stage of the Tartu Maraton Klassik. RM is part of the UCI Gravel World Series (hereinafter UGWS) (see item 14).

1.2. The 29th Tartu Bike Marathon is held in accordance with the competition rules of the International Cycling Union (UCI), the UGWS and Estonian Cycling Federation (EJL) regulations, these Race Regulations, and the decisions of the Club Tartu Maraton Board.

1.3. UGWS is an international race series that brings together the world's leading gravel races and is aimed at more competitively minded amateur cyclists. Series participants can qualify, within their age group, for the Gravel World and European Championships.

1.4. Riders who do not wish to compete against others in their age group may take part in any Tartu Bike Marathon distance either by starting in the so-called Open group on the 123 km distance, or, on the shorter distances, by choosing the start corridor matching their expected finish time.

1.5. In addition to the main race on 19 September 2026, a virtual race for the 29th Tartu Bike Marathon takes place from 11–27 September 2026, under separate regulations. Registration for the virtual race is separate; registering for the virtual race does not guarantee the right to participate in the main race, and vice versa.

Completion of a virtual race distance will count towards multiple participation awards (silver and gold pins) of RM if the participant does not have a result from the main races in the given year. The RM virtual race is not part of the UGWS series.

1.6. Matters not covered by these regulations shall be resolved by the Organizing Committee and/or Commissaires Panel as they arise.

  • 5. Participation rules

5.1. Bicycle type is free. A competitor will be disqualified for using a car or similar motorised vehicle (including an e-bike) to move along the course, or any other outside assistance not permitted by the rules (e.g. a male competitor pushing a female competitor to increase her speed). Video footage of the event, reviewed before the official results are published, may also serve as grounds for disqualification.

    • Non-standard bicycles that do not comply with UCI CR points 1.3.007–1.3.009 and 1.3.024 may only start with the consent of the Chief Commissaire, under specified conditions, and without endangering other participants on the course. The result of a participant granted special permission is recorded separately from the general results.
    • Participants competing in the UGWS ranking are prohibited from using time-trial aero bars or a time-trial handlebar.
    • For safety reasons, we also strongly recommend that participants on all other distances refrain from using a time-trial handlebar or aero bars, and remove from their bikes any attachments extending beyond the standard dimensions (e.g. mirrors, racks, kickstands) for the Tartu Bike Marathon, in order to avoid becoming entangled with other riders in a group and to reduce the risk of additional injury in the event of a crash.

5.2. Participation in RM is at the participant's own risk. Accident and/or health insurance is recommended. The organiser is not liable for any harm to a participant's health or for damage to or loss of personal property.

8.1. The Tartu Bike Marathon's start groups are formed with participant safety as the guiding principle.

    • Tartu Bike Marathon starts take place as wave starts, and timing begins with the starting gun of the respective wave. Net time is not recorded.
    • The 123 km distance has 3 start waves. All men competing in the UGWS ranking, including M Elite, start in the first wave. All women competing in the UGWS ranking, including N Elite, start in the second wave. Everyone else who does not wish to compete in the age group race starts in the third wave.
    • The 83 km, 39 km and 21 km distances also have wave starts. Start groups are formed according to expected finish time (except for the elite riders and the N50+ and M60+ age groups competing in the UGWS ranking). On these distances, participants choose their own suitable start group (except for the 83 km elite group).
    • Only riders holding a valid ME or MU cycling licence (issued by a national cycling federation belonging to the UCI) may apply to start in the elite group of the 123 km or 83 km distance. A written application must be sent to tartumaraton@tartumaraton.ee by the end of the 2nd registration round at the latest. Later applications will not be considered.
    • In addition, men who placed 1st–100th and women who placed 1st–20th at the 2025 (coefficient 1), 2024 (coefficient 1.1) and 2023 (coefficient 1.2) Tartu Bike Marathon on the 83 km distance are automatically placed in the 83 km elite group, except for those competing in the UGWS series, who must start from their own age group.
    • There are two start groups on the 21 km distance.
    • The numbered start protocol will be published no later than three days before the race.

  • 9. Hand-out of start numbers

9.1. Start materials are handed out:

On 18 September, at the Race Centre

    • Lõunakeskus atrium (Lääneringtee 39, Tartu), 10:00–20:00.

On 19 September, at the start venues

    • In Otepää
      • for the 123 km distance, 7:30–8:50
      • for the 83 km distance, 7:30–10:50
      • for the 39 km distance, 13:00–14:20
    • At the Palu service point
      • for the 21 km distance, 8:30–9:50.
  • 10. Participant/Bike Transport, Parking and Traffic Arrangements

    10.1. Participant and Bike Transport

On the morning of race day, special shuttle buses transport participants from Tartu and the Elva finish car park to the start car parks, and after the marathon, back from the finish venue to Tartu and the start car parks. Bikes are transported by trucks on the basis of the shuttle bus ticket; the trucks travel together with the shuttle buses.

Travel by shuttle bus is paid: the day ticket costs €6 when bought in advance and €10 when bought on the bus. Advance tickets are sold in the Tartu Maraton self-service environment and at the Race Centre. The shuttle bus timetable will be published on the website no later than two weeks before the race.

    10.2. Parking

Parking at the start venue car parks in Otepää and Palu is free of charge. Cars are directed to the car parks according to traffic arrangements and capacity.

Parking at the finish venue's car parks (at the 2nd km of the Elva–Hellenurme road) is paid. The parking fee is €7 and the parking zone code is EP500. See Parking Information.

Buses with more than 10 passenger seats park free of charge.

    10.3. Traffic Arrangements

The Rattamaraton course runs mostly on the Tartu Maraton track, on forest and gravel roads. In accordance with the competition rules, the course is marked 48 hours before the start. Traffic restrictions apply on public and local roads. Participants are required to comply with traffic rules, follow traffic signs, and obey the signals of traffic marshals. Escort vehicles for competitors (cars, motorcycles, SUVs, etc.) are not permitted on the race course; the only exception is organiser vehicles with special permits.

Stopping and parking at the service points is regulated by temporary traffic signs; failure to comply results in sanctions in accordance with traffic regulations. Special areas are reserved for the parking of vehicles servicing elite competitors, which may only be entered with special permission.

  • 11. Time keeping and results

11.1. Timing takes place only using the electronic timing chip. The chip is attached to the back of the race number. The chip may not be removed or damaged in any way (e.g. folded). The chip is single-use; it does not need to be returned to the organiser.

11.2. To receive a result, throughout the entire Rattamaraton, from entering the start corridor until crossing the finish line, the participant must wear the 29th RM race number visibly on the handlebar, with the timing chip coded to that number attached to its back.

    • The shape and size of the race number may not be altered, whether by cutting it smaller or folding its edges.
    • The race number must be attached to the handlebar in an upright position and must be clearly legible from the front.
    • The correctness of the race number's attachment is checked upon entering the start corridor, and in case of incorrect attachment, the participant is asked to reattach the number on the spot.
    • If a violation is detected after the start, the participant automatically receives a 10-minute time penalty, added to the finish time. See HERE for how to attach the race number to the handlebar.
    •

11.3. Results are published on an ongoing basis as preliminary unofficial results on the Tartu Maraton website. Official results are published on the Friday after the race at 17:00, on the tartumaraton.ee website.

11.4. Anyone who has participated under a false name and/or number, with two or more timing chips, or has otherwise behaved unsportingly (see also the preceding items of these regulations), will be disqualified. The Race Director and Race Secretary have the right, where evidence comes to light, to make a decision on disqualification or a time penalty even retroactively, after the official results have been confirmed.

11.5. Protests concerning race results, breaches of the competition rules, etc. must be submitted to the Chief Commissaire:

    • for the first hundred finishers, within 1 hour after the 100th competitor finishes;
    • for everyone else, until the finish closes.
    • The protest fee (except for results-related protests) is €40, refunded only if the protest is upheld. All protests related to the race are resolved by the Commissaires Panel.
    • Inquiries regarding unofficial results can be submitted on race day to the race secretariat until the finish closes, and to the Club Tartu Maraton secretariat until the Wednesday after the race at 17:00.

  • 12. Awarding of Winners

12.1. Awards ceremony takes place in the finish area according to race programme.

On the podium, awards are given as follows:

    • In the 123 km distance general ranking, the 6 best men and women are awarded cups and special prizes.
    • On the 123 km distance, the top three of each age group in the UGWS ranking are awarded a cup and medal. The winner of each age group additionally receives a UGWS jersey.
    • In the 83 km distance general ranking, the 3 best men and women are awarded cups and special prizes.
    • On the 83 km distance, the top three of each age group in the UGWS ranking are awarded a cup and medal. The winner of each age group additionally receives a UGWS jersey.
    • On the 83 km distance, the top three of the N/M junior age group are awarded a cup.
    • On the 39 km distance, the 3 best young riders in the N/M16 (born 2010 or later) category are awarded cups and special prizes. No separate ranking is determined among participants in the remaining age groups.
    • On the 21 km distance, the 3 best young riders in the N/M12 (born 2014 or later) category are awarded cups and special prizes. No separate ranking is determined among participants in the remaining age groups.
    • UGWS age groups: see item 14.2.2.

    • The winners of the intermediate sprints (best man and best woman) are awarded cash or in-kind prizes.
    • The top three teams in the team ranking are awarded cups and free entries to the next Klassik race. Cups are presented on the podium during the awards ceremony; information on free registration is sent to the team representative's email.
    • Cash prizes are transferred to winners' bank accounts after the official results and doping test results have been confirmed. Income tax is withheld from all cash prizes in accordance with the applicable rate and Estonian legislation.
    • An athlete who does not attend the official awards ceremony forfeits the right to their prize.

  • 13. Cancellation of the event

13.1. If the event is cancelled due to a force majeure the participation fees shall be refunded in accordance with the current regulations and rights of the organiser which state that the organiser may deduce the sum used for already made arrangements.

13.2. In case of cancelling event due to force majeure with an announcement of the cancellation 72 hours beforehand, 50% of participation fees will be transferred to participants’ self service accounts as credit which can be used for next entry fee payments in the Klassik series. The credit is valid until the end of the 1st registration period of the next Tartu Rattamaraton.

13.2.1. If the participant does not wish to use the transfer possibilities mentioned under p.13.2. and wishes to be refunded the 50% of the participation fee, he/she is obliged to present Club Tartu Maraton with a proper application in the course of 1 month after the cancelled event’s date. This must be done by post (Laulupeo pst. 25, 51007 Tartu) or by e-mail (tartumaraton@tartumaraton.ee).

13.2.2. All private persons whose 50% of participation fees will be transferred to next events are obliged to confirm their registration and pay the rest of the participation fee by the end of the first registration period of the next Tartu Rattamaraton. After the named date no complaints will be accepted or satisfied.

13.2.3. Participation fees paid by legal entities (enterprises, clubs, etc.) are only to be transferred to next events. This means that they cannot be refunded. People who were registered to the event by a given enterprise will not be automatically transferred. The 50% of fees paid will be transferred to the account of the representative of the given legal entity. The representative of the enterprise is obliged to renew the registration list (make a new group registration) by the end of the first deadline of registration for the following year’s Tartu Rattamaraton. After this deadline it is no longer possible to use last year’s participation fees and no later complaints will be satisfied.

13.3. A force majeure is considered to be any unpredictable event that the organiser has no control over. The organiser cannot change its time or way of occurrence, control it or stop it from happening (e.g. war, rebellion, strike, fire, flood, earthquake, (snow)storm, downpour or any other act of nature, pandemic, or other state restrictions etc.)

13.4. If the event is cancelled due to a force majeure no expenditures made to third parties by the participants are to be compensated by the organisers of Tartu Rattamaraton. We advise participants from abroad to purchase a travel insurance that would cover the expenses caused by the cancellation of the event.

13.5. If the parties cannot find an agreement the discords shall be solved in accordance with the Estonian laws in the Tartu county court.

  • 14. UCI Gravel World Series

    14.2. Rules of Participation

    14.2.1. Licences

Participation in the UGWS ranking is possible with one of the following licences:

    • No licence, in accordance with the conditions set by the national federation of the organising country.
    • Amateur licence
    • Master licence
    • Cycling for All licence
    • Elite licence

Note: To qualify for the UCI Gravel World Championships, a valid licence issued by your national federation is required (day licences are not valid), along with a UCI ID and appropriate accident and civil liability insurance in the country where the UCI Gravel World Championships takes place.

    14.2.2. Age Groups

Results in the UGWS race are divided into the following age groups, for both women and men:

    • MEN ELITE
    • WOMEN ELITE
    • 19–34
    • 35–39
    • 40–44
    • 45–49
    • 50–54
    • 55–59
    • 60–64
    • 65–69
    • 70–74
    • 75–79
    • etc. (each subsequent 5-year category in which riders have registered)

The age group is determined by age on 31 December of the qualifying race's year. If qualification occurs after the deadline for the following year's World Championships and the age group changes in the following year, the qualification is automatically carried over to the new age group — there is no need to requalify in the new age group in the World Championships year.

Medals and titles are awarded to men and/or women as soon as at least 1 rider has registered in the corresponding 5-year age category. To register in the Elite category, an annual licence with a UCI ID (Elite-year licence) must be submitted at registration.

14.3. Qualification for the UCI Gravel World Championships

In accordance with the official qualification system for the 2025 UCI Gravel World Championships, every UGWS race grants qualification rights to the UCI Gravel World Championships to riders who finish among the top 25% in their category. This 25% is calculated based on the number of starters in each category, not the number of finishers.

    • Elite riders of UCI-registered teams must always compete in the Elite category.
    • Riders with a national-level licence may choose whether to start in the Elite category or in their own age group — this choice must be made before the race.
    • Registering in the Elite category allows qualification only in the Elite category. Registering in an age group category allows qualification only in that category. If an elite rider does not qualify in the Elite category, they cannot claim qualification in their own age group, even if their finish time would fall within the top 25% of that age category.

In addition, the first three finishers of every official category qualify directly for the World Championships, regardless of the number of starters in that age group. The race must be completed to obtain qualification.

For all other means of qualification (wild cards, national champions, etc.), please refer to the official qualification system for the 2025 UCI Gravel World Championships.

The names of riders who have qualified through the UGWS are published on the UCI Gravel World Series website, and qualified riders are sent an official email from the UCI inviting them to register for the UCI Gravel World Championships through a dedicated online registration portal.

How the Number of Qualified Riders Is Determined

    • All riders who complete the qualifying distance — regardless of which start wave they started in — are eligible for qualification to the UCI Gravel World Championships and are counted when calculating the top 25% list.
    • The first three finishers of each category are always qualified, regardless of the number of starters in that category. A five-year age group is created as soon as at least 1 rider participates in it.
    • The top 25% is calculated based on the number of riders who actually started (not the number registered or the number who finished). The 25% is rounded up to the largest whole number: for example, with 26 starters, 6.5 riders are eligible for qualification, meaning the first 7 are invited to the World Championships.
    • Since the minimum age for participating in the UCI Gravel World Championships is 19, only riders born before 31 December 2006 can qualify for the 2025 UCI Gravel World Championships. For races taking place in the same year and shortly before the World Championships (October–December), riders who are 18 at the time of qualification may already qualify, since they turn 19 in the 2025 World Championships year.
    • Lists of qualified riders may be published online or on-site at the qualifying race, provided it is clearly stated that the results are pending UCI confirmation. Only the list published on www.ucigravelworldseries.com is considered the official list of qualified riders.

14.4. Course — Bicycles, Jerseys, Mechanical Assistance, Timing and Ranking

    14.4.1. Bicycles

Any type of bicycle may be used (road, mountain, city, hybrid, cyclocross, etc.), except tandems, e-bikes or recumbent bicycles. Time-trial road bikes are also prohibited.

At the UCI Gravel World Championships, the bicycle must have dropped handlebars; mountain bikes are not permitted.

    14.4.2. Jerseys

Any jersey may be worn at the qualifying race, with one exception: reigning world champions are required to wear their official jersey at UGWS qualifying races.

    14.4.3. Technical Assistance

Riders must bring their own tools and a spare outer/inner tyre or tubeless spare. Tools for solving other problems are also available at the service points. Wheels may be changed anywhere during the race, but the same bike frame must be used throughout the entire race.

14.5. Awards — UGWS Medal, UGWS Jersey

    14.5.1. UGWS Medal

Finishing among the top 25% of your category at a UGWS qualifying race earns a medal. Medals are distributed after the race at the designated location. If you finish among the top three in your age group, the medal is presented on the podium.

Please note: receiving a medal does not automatically grant the right to participate in the World Championships, as results must be confirmed by the UCI.

    14.5.2. UGWS Jersey

The winner (N/M) of each age group receives a jersey. Winners of the Elite category receive a specially designed jersey.
